The Secret to Functional Kali Skill
Okay so, it’s not really a secret but, this is something I find most Kali schools and training groups don’t really focus on or at the very least don’t spend enough time training. That is combining striking with footwork.
So much of Kali training these days emphasizes what’s happening on the upper half of the body. Look, I get it. Swinging and clicking sticks is fun and there’s nothing more satisfying than hearing the clicks of rattan or even sometimes smelling that sweet rattan burn smell.
However, because I get so many comments questioning the reality function of Kali and these cool quick drills, the reality is you need the skill of moving and striking at the same time.
I’m not really sure why so many don’t actually train this. I mean I get it, it’s a workout and this training will cause you to sweat and even breathe heavily but, after all, isn’t that what we’re after as far as developing functional skills? Stamina, right?
I’ve heard so many well-known instructors preach about footwork but, when I would attend their seminars in the past we hardly did any, and many times none at all. I vowed that in every single session, seminar, or camp I teach we WILL do footwork.
If you’re serious about building functional skills with your Kali then here is a little drill series that will teach you to start combining your strikes with footwork.
As always, stay safe and happy training, team!
